Releases keep breaking
After deployment, errors appear on the server that never showed up in testing.
A containerization platform: the app and its dependencies are packed in one image. We choose it so releases are predictable and a server change breaks nothing.
"It works on my machine" is the phrase behind failed releases and days lost hunting bugs. Docker makes the environment identical everywhere, from a developer's laptop to the live server.
After deployment, errors appear on the server that never showed up in testing.
New developers need to get started fast instead of spending days setting up an environment.
The product is being prepared for the cloud, Kubernetes or multiple servers and has to be portable.
Separate containers for the backend, database and queues that start with a single command.
Building the image in a CI/CD pipeline and deploying to the server with no manual steps.
Each service in its own container with independent updates.
Packaging a legacy app into a container to move it to a new server.

It depends on your plans. For a simple site on shared hosting it is not required. But if the product has a backend and a database and plans to grow, Docker saves time on every release and move from day one.
No, not noticeably. Containers use the server's operating system kernel, so the overhead is much lower than with virtual machines. Users will not feel the difference.
A manual setup is hard to reproduce: every new server is configured from scratch, and mistakes are inevitable. Docker describes the environment as code, so the product deploys the same way on any server, and rolling back to a previous version is much easier.
At GVSPACE we use Docker so the client's product works the same at every stage: development, testing and production. We package the backend, databases and supporting services into containers and set up automated builds and deployment. This way web apps, APIs and microservice products ship without surprises, and the infrastructure is easy to move to the cloud or Kubernetes.
